Pursuit of Happiness: How To Be The King of Happy & Wear Your Smile As Your Crown
72Happiness isn't a destination that you can reach, and it's definitely not a place to rest. It isn't the thrill of a roller coaster either, although it can be an up and down ride. There is no easy was to truly be happy. It takes a conscious and willing effort to live thought by thought and day by day. Like most things, it takes continuous practice to get it right. There is good news though, because all of the tools you will need to wear a smile as your crown are right here waiting for you...
The act of being happy is an emotion, but it's not the only one you'll encounter. Whether we like it or not, we need the balance of all our emotions to be healthy and happy. The true test comes with battling the negative emotions when they do come.
Combating Anger
When dealing with your anger, it is key to focus on lowering your irritability. Three words to remember when doing this are patience, tolerance, and humility. Practicing these on a day to day basis will turn an angry tirade to a few seconds of annoyance. Before you get to that point of stability, there are two simple things you can do to transform your homicidal thoughts to your new garden of zen. The first and most crucial step is to take a mental time-out and look at the situation with an outsider's point of view. Secondly, express your anger in your head and analyze it. You'll find when you do this, you often realize you're getting frustrated with something unimportant.
Facing Fear
With fear comes risk, and with risk comes either success or failure. Once you lose your inhibition of failure, you gain the success of facing fear. Then at that point, you already have separated yourself from why most people can't be happy or fulfill their dreams. When dealing with fear, you have to visualize it as a spreading virus. If you don't battle it right away, it will multiply and ultimately kill you and your dreams. Also, before you tackle your phobia dead-on, it is beneficial to practice overcoming your fear mentally.
Dodging Disappointment
What do you do when your expectations fall short? Society will tell you to lower them. Don't listen to society. Society is like gravity, it constantly tries to pull you down. Instead, find the positive in the situation and focus on new days with unlimited possibilities. Something to also practice is to avoid comparisons. Treat every day and every event as a new experience, no matter how routine they may be. Imagine flying through space and then two weeks later you're walking down the street. You would never be able to be happy again if you constantly compare feelings or "highs."
Subtracting Sadness
Whether you're in tears or at a crossroads of emotions, it is imperative to understand that you and only you control your thoughts. That means you are in control 100%. You have the power to delete negative thoughts and act on the positive ones. It isn't the easiest task if you're in an anxiety funk or a depressed isolation. So, it is just as important to get out of your own head and focus on others. Finally, another trick to smiles is to imagine an immediate future full of hope and then set small, attainable goals.
The King of Happy
Now that you can control your emotions, you're ready to put on your crown. Here's some tips to keep your crown smiling.
-
Make a list of things that make you happy: add them to your daily schedule.
-
Make a list of things that make you sad: try to limit them as much as possible.
-
(repeat) Ignore negative thoughts and avoid comparisons.
-
Avoid avoiding: procrastinating and being lazy creates unneeded stress.
-
Stay grounded, focused, and humble: when we reach a peak or high point of happiness, we often fall off because we stop doing the things that got us there.
-
Try new things: perspective can rejuvenate and make us appreciate what we have.
-
Spread out rewards: instead of splurging, stay balanced and maximize your happiness.
-
Find a way to express yourself healthfully: a great way to alleviate stress and get to know the real you.
Happiness is just a positive thought away.
Stay Golden,
